Citizens and committees from Italian port cities, united in the campaign and network “Let the Mediterranean breathe” led by Cittadini per l’aria in the effort to shed light on the serious problem of emissions from large ships, have demonstrated against air pollution from shipping with banners in 9 port cities on the European Maritime Day, asking for more controls on emissions from ships and more measures and actions at EU and national level to achieve that shipping does not conflict with the air quality and the environment of port cities. A campaign to inform the public on the impact of shipping, through postcards virtually picturing children as filters of shipping fumes and an oncoming guide indicating critical topics and solutions for clean air in port cities will be distributed widely to raise attention on this topic.
