The quality of tap water in the Balearic Islands has traditionally been seen as harmful for human consumption. As a result, bottled water consumption is the norm, despite the fact that tap water in 81.3% of the Balearic Islands is drinkable. Inspired, Save The Med Foundation have published results showcasing the findings from a Water Quality Project which map the tap water quality in the area. By educating locals there can be a reduction in the use of unnecessary bottled water. There are also calls to improve the use of water filtering systems in areas where tap water is not safe to drink.
